What to Know About Being a Tattooist
Tattooing, to many, doesn’t sound like an actual profession. However many tattooists are incredibly talented artists. The only difference is that their canvas is someone’s body and the medium is ink and a needle.
The tattoo industry has historically been an underground movement with the general view of them being dirty places in someone’s backyard. This combined with the age restriction of 18 in order to legally get tattooed, has lead to a rather negative stigma attached to the tattoo artist.
Legitimate tattoo parlours however, are clean places with professional staff. To become a Tattooist an apprenticeship is usually undertaken, similarly to a hairdresser.
Tattoo artists need to be clean, hygienic, talented, good communicators and passionate. Communications skills may not seem that important however the need to make the client feel at ease, feel happy and comfortable with their decision, being able to understand exactly what the client wants and all very important factors for a successful tattooist.
Wages of a tattooist vary depending on skill, clientele, experience, and management. There is a lot of self promotion involved in becoming a successful Tattooist; many have other mediums with which they like to work and co-exist as conventional artists as well as body artists.
