Embody Beauty by Becoming a Make-Up Artist
A Make-Up Artist work in the art industry, however the job itself is classified as a trade as it requires an apprenticeship and Certificate program to be completed. Similar to a hairdresser, Make-Up artists work out of salons, department stores, fashion shows, the film industry or freelance.
Make-Up artists apply and advise on make-up and often skin care to clients, models and film stars. Make-up artists can also work with prosthetics and costume design. Make-up needs to convey a character, especially on TV, leading to artists working with false eyelashes, fake blood and fake facial deformities.
Artists need to be very good at their job as success in the industry is very competitive. Skills needed are artistic talent, patience, communication skills, efficiency, ability to work under pressure, able to work to a deadline, knowledge of colour and co-ordination and tolerance.
As part of an apprenticeship, make-up artists usually begin at beauty school working through the certificate program. This program consists of learning areas like Make-Up services, retail cosmetic services and beauty therapy. Due to the competitive nature of the industry, furthering of education is always an asset such as studies in body art, other beauty areas, TV/film and hairdressing.
Career opportunities aren't extensive and are mostly limited to bigger jobs, self-promotion creating opportunities and diversifying within the art/beauty industry. The salary of a Make-Up Artist averages around $48K, however this figure includes the lower salaries of apprentices so the mean salary is likely to be higher.
