How to Get a Job as a Qualified Hairdresser

Becoming a Qualified Hairdresser can be a long process. While there are no dedicated hairdressing degrees, the hairdresser program is set up as more of an apprenticeship. In order to get a job as a hairdresser one needs to complete a (usually) 1 year course at an accredited school and then gain employment as a trainee in a salon before becoming a qualified hairdresser.

All states in Australia have schools offering hairdressing courses, which are usually run out of specialised beauty or hairdressing schools. Certificates II III IV or a diploma are usually offered by Hairdressing schools and range in time from 6 weeks to 12 months.

In order to enrol in a course, applicants must be at least 16 and have passed year 10. Many hairdressers undertake a combined course of hairdressing and beauty or some form of Naturopathic medicine.

Upon completion, graduates are able to continue working in a salon, undertake further training to become a teacher, open their own salon or take on a consultant role at fashion shows or similar.

Hairdressing salaries vary depending on the area of expertise, talent and reputation of the salon. They generally range from $59K - $67K, however celebrity hairdressers such as Joh Bailey can command significantly higher pay checks, and usually work in styling and beauty as well.
