Be a Garbage Collector For a Better Environmental Future
A Garbage Collection job doesn't sound all that appealing for a lot of people; however it is a job that without it, you would certainly notice the difference. The primary job of a garbage collector is to collect rubbish on allocated days; this includes household garbage, recycling, green waste, commercial waste and hard rubbish.
A garbage collector will operate a garbage truck which involves using the mechanical arm to pick up bins, or manually place bins into the mechanical arm on the bin. They also manually collect hard waste, operate large compacting machinery and some also drive street sweepers. Garbage collectors usually work outdoors in suburbia, at the rubbish tip or in the office supervising rubbish collecting.
Most garbage collectors work for the government or local councils as they are primarily responsible for community cleanliness. There are also companies that specialise in waste collection for business and industry. Garbage collectors are required to have a drivers licence, be physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
It is not required that garbage collectors hold any formal educational qualifications however it is recommended that applicants have completed year 10. There is a TAFE certificate program in Waste Management available however this is not required for most positions. For More specialised Waste collection positions such as flammable, industrial or toxic waste, further training is required.
The salary range of a Garbage Collector is usually around $40K - $50K, with promotion opportunities in the way of supervisorial roles, waste management advisory roles or other positions within the council and community management.
