Sport Nut? Become a Sports Editor

A sports editor needs to have a range of skills but most importantly, needs to be interested in sport. A Sports Editor works for a newspaper, tabloid or magazine and will work in both print and online print areas.

The sports editor for a publication will need to be a good leader, writer, be able to meet deadlines, have good attention to detail and will understand how a newspaper or relevant publication operates. Sports editors will need to have gained a degree in English and/or Journalism usually by undertaking an Arts degree or relevant degree with a major in Journalism.

Journalist salaries fluctuate depending on the news cycle and the level of employment they have with the publication. Many journalists work on a casual basis and begin as cadets reporting on mundane routine events. Once they prove themselves as writers and their ability to find and capitalise on a news story, they progress through the journalistic ranks reaching such positions as sub editors (such as sports editor) and ultimately the Senior Editor.

Experience often dictates a lot when negotiating a salary; this salary can range between $68K - $75K and will increase depending on the size, reach and sales of the publication. Sports Editors will need to be dedicated to their team, a variety of sports and to reading material that may not be within their area of interest, as well as providing constructive criticism and making editorial decisions.
