Restaurant Manager Positions – What’s Involved?


In the hospitality industry one of the aims of waiter and waitresses is to become the Restaurant Manager. This position demands good time management, responsibility, people skills and most importantly Customer Service skills.

As a result experience in the hospitality is a must for all applicants, and often these positions are filled in-house by assistant managers or exceptional wait staff. Restaurant managers can be in charge of a range of areas depending on the size and structure of the business. MacDonalds managers are responsible for the whole store – service, cooking and cleaning staff.

In smaller restaurants, they may be only involved with rosters, on-job management, wage control, staff complaints, customer complaints and general customer service. Gaining experience in cafes and through hospitality agencies is the best method of entry into the industry.

However, there are courses at TAFEs in all Australian states that provide experience, leverage and information on the industry and how to ensure career progression. Career prospects are limited in small businesses and usually this position is a good way to gain management experience with a view to opening up your own hospitality service or moving into a similar role in a bigger business. Management experience can also assist with management roles in other industries.

Restaurant manager positions can range in wages; most wages range from $40K - $50K however in busy, demanding roles with good industry standards a salary can grow to $60K. Hospitality is a noted poorly paying industry for those working permanently but can be rewarding for casual and function workers.
