What Does A Professional Accountant Do?


An accountant is someone who is professionally qualified and recognised in the accounting and finance field. To become a professional accountant, a qualification is required, be it a degree or an advanced diploma in the field.

In Australia, membership with the Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) is highly regarded and often required for Professional Accounting jobs. Membership with Professional National Accountants (PNA) and being a Member of National Institute of Accountants (MNIA) is also highly regarded in the industry.

Accountants often work in firms purely dedicated to providing accounting services and advice, however due to the increase in financial wealth and regulation, accountants are often hired by companies to have in-house.

Accountants measure and analyse external and in house financial information in order to gain an understanding of:

  • The financial external environment
  • Financial validity of the business for which they work
  • Financial future of the company, investments, mergers, opportunities and threats
  • Taxation and;
  • Information gathering with which senior managers can make decisions

Working as a Professional Accountant requires accuracy, dedication, people skills, sensitivity and respect for privacy. Because of the range of accounting jobs now available, specialisation is advantageous and can command a higher salary.
