Spreading the Word As A Postal Worker
A job as a Postal Worker can have some unexpected benefits. For a mail deliverer being outside nearly all the time as well as being able to interact with people are some serious benefits for those not wanting an office job. However there is the obvious downfall of having to work in extreme weather.
As a postal worker you are generally employed by Australia Post unless you work for private courier or messenger companies. There are many different roles that one can take as a postal worker: sales, customer service, sorting, delivering, loading and marketing. Most of these areas also offer a degree of career progression in terms of management (team leader, department and senior roles). Sorting officers often work nights as mail gets collected late afternoon/evenings and delivered in the morning/early afternoon.
Because of the level of dispersion, candidates are required to undergo a police check, must be residents of Australia and need to be able to remain motivated while doing repetitive clerical tasks. Saying this, the industry does encourage social interaction and stimulation in order to encourage job performance and retention.
Most roles as a Postal Worker are entry-level and require no formal training. More specialised roles require training in the relevant fields. A Postal Worker's earnings can vary depending on what type of work they do. Deliverers can earn in excess of $48K whereas Mail Sorters earn approximately $41K. This industry average is around $45K, the main provider of services in Australia being Australia Post.
