Young at Heart - Become a Obstetrician

Obstetrics is an area of professional medicine involved in pre-natal medical care. Obstetricians work with parents, particularly the mother, before, during and after the birth of children. They are usually qualified doctors who have specialised in Paediatrics or Obstetrics.

To be an Obstetrician one needs to be most importantly, intelligent, caring and mature. They also need to have very good communication skills, people skills, confidence, compassion and responsible nature. Students spend a lot of time working in hospitals and assisting fully qualified doctors in order to develop these skills as these skills cannot be taught effectively.

Educational requirements to enter this field are competitive and take dedication and time. It is required that Obstetricians have completed a degree usually in Biomedical Science or a combined Medicine/Surgery degree. There are no equivalent TAFE courses however there are Postgraduate programs such as Doctorates and masters programs available. Specialisation requires extra work in the field, research papers and often a great deal of networking.

Medicine is generally a very well paid field because of demand, education requirements and intellectual requirements needed to be able to practice. While there are a range of salaries and packages open to people working in this field, it is not unusual for Obstetricians to earn in excess of $140K per annum.
