Green fingers? Become a Landscaper
Landscapers are often associated with TV programs like Backyard Blitz and other garden renovation lifestyle shows. In reality, the Landscaping industry is diverse. There are different levels of landscapers that require different levels of talent and education.
A general landscaper is essentially a professional gardener. They need to be dedicated, able to work to a deadline, communication skills, work outside normal business hours and be creative and accurate. They can work for the council, be self employed or work for franchises like Jims Gardening. Franchises often pay per hours, thus income can be dependent on work load and word of mouth advertising.
For most Landscaper positions a certificate or diploma qualification is required unless a high level of experience and talent is displayed. The most common accredited certificate is Cert 3 in Landscape Construction, available at many TAFEs across Australia. Another way into the industry is with an Apprenticeship where specialisation can include bricklaying, irrigation and construction. An OH & S certificate is also an asset.
Salaries for Landscapers depend on type of business, experience and work specifications. A mid range salary can be around $48K but can range approximately +/- $5K. It is not noted as a highly paid industry and many workers have a passion for it, or have a view to becoming the next Jamie Durie – for this charisma is a must!
