Becoming a Fully-Fledged Insurance Broker

Insurance is not usually associated with an exciting career. An Insurance Broker however works slightly differently in that they act as an independent agent who sells insurance on behalf of a variety of companies. This allows for clients to get a more personalised deal because of the increased choice of plans.

Insurance comes in a range of forms: car, life, fire, accident, home, contents and business. To be a successful broker, a good understanding of numbers and attention to detail are very important, in addition they also need to be mature, reliable and have good communication skills. It is often an industry closely related to banking, finance and statistics.

To become an Insurance Broker there are specific courses such as financial services diplomas or insurance broking, as well as degrees in Accounting, Law, Commerce, Business in which you can further major in banking, finance and or insurance. While there aren't many direct career opportunities, moving into a different area is often an option, such as financial positions or different Insurance related areas.

Average salaries of an Insurance Broker are reasonably steady between $55K and $72K. It ranges because of experience, employer and client base. Many people have the same insurance broker/company all their lives because it is such a sensitive area and like to have someone that knows then and whom they can trust. This trust often spreads word of mouth and enables brokers to command a higher salary.
