Sound of Music - Become a Governess

A governess seems like something out of a period drama or the sound of music, but the position does exist in Australia as well. A Governess is not just a babysitter, but usually a live-in nanny that in particular tutor the children with whom they work. As a result of modern culture, this position is usually based in remote locations where parents would rather teach at home rather than boarding school.

Governesses need to be enthusiastic, motivated, like and work well with kids, have their own transport, maturity and reliable. They also need to be prepared to move to remote locations and live with the family for whom they will be working. Most governesses also need to have qualifications in Child Services and highly recommended to hold some form of educational training such as a degree or diploma.

For most positions it is also beneficial to be able to present a police check and a working with children check. For career progression, governesses can move to more demanding family sizes or into boarding schools. Many governesses use this position as a chance to travel as there are many positions available across the world, particularly in the UK and Europe.

Pay rates for Governesses are not high; however live-in governesses often get accommodation, food and sometime living accessories as an included bonus as an incentive and because they are required to move into the family home. A base salary may start from $30K and depending on the work load and income of the family can increase to $60K. Positions in Europe are often paid higher than here in Australia.
