A traditional engineer is no longer a term that describes any engineers role. Form this theory stems the role of the Environmental Engineer. They are primarily involved with researching, analysing, monitoring and managing the effects of humans and human created industry on the environment, both built and natural.
An environmental engineer researches, develops and evaluates technologies, theories and techniques in order to make a recommendation to key decision makers. A controversial field of environmental engineering is related to pollution and climate change. Aside from this area they can also work in environmental management and sustainable economics.
As a result, an Environmental Engineer needs to be technologically adaptable, analytically thinking, creative, responsible, posses good communication skills, and be genuinely interested in the field of environmentalism. Engineers in this field can work in an array of industries including the State and Federal Government, Mineral, Chemical, Civil Engineering Industries and in corporate Social Responsibility.
To enter into this field, a degree is usually preferred. This can be a Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Engineering, Applied Science, or Environmental Science. There are also TAFE programs that cover similar material including areas such as Environmental Management, Urban Management, Sustainability and conservation and land Management.
The standard salary for a Professional Environmental Engineer is around $82K. Many job salary packages vary between $50K-$100K depending on the industry, job description and experience. Often an Environmental Engineer will be classified as a scientist as well and their job function will involve more technical and analytical components.
