Centrelink career assessors need to be able to communicate well as come of the people they work with are disabled, immigrants, un-educated and disinterested. In addition, staff must be able to accurately and comprehensively complete paperwork as well as be able to adhere exactly to rules and regualtions.
Workers are based in an offices within a Centrelink centre and do not usually do a lot of work outside the office. They also need to be able to understand and thoroughly explain concepts, as many functions of their job role involve large amounts of money, peoples livelyhoods and signatures. Because people signing paperwork may not be able to read English well, there is a legal responsibility to ensure they understand all the concepts within the relevant document.
In order to gain a position as a Career advisor with Centrelink, a degree is preferred. In most states relevant degrees include a Bachelor of Human Services, Social Science or Social Work. Specialisation within these degrees is possible in order to gain a better understanding of the government and Social security system. There are also many TAFE certificates and diplomas avaliable including community services work, community welfare work and community services management. None of these qualifications are mandatory however they would assisit and supplement the application.
Government employees are also required to undergo a police check and a comprehensive background check fo national security reasons and because they ahve access to highly sensitive documents.Full time workers in this area of Centrelink can expect to be paid approximately $56K, however this depends on experieince, caseload and seniority. As a government position, the salary is well above the minimun wage.
