Career advisors need to be caring and able to communicate information in a precise and understandable manner.

Career advisors offer planning advise, consult with mangers, develop career plans and techniques and prepare and investigate specific employment areas such as disabled and multicultural. Councilling and subtlety skills are also important as advisors can be required to give both good and bad news to clients.

Specialisation can include disability career guidance, vocational guidance and senior management guidance.

In order to become a career advisor one would need to have completed secondary education as a minimum. In order to remain competitive in gaining a position a university degree such as a Psychology Degree or Arts degree with a major in psychology and guidance councelling. Most universities in Australia offer some form of Psychology degree. There are also basic TAFE degrees available, however for full accreditation a degree needs to be completed. Salaries for a career advisor range from around $45 to $55K depending on experience, employer and employer sector.
