A flight Attendant is most well know for the hand signal "dance" informing passengers of what to do in the event of an emergency. Their primary job role is to provide customer service, comfort, safety and meals to flight passengers. Cabin crew vary in which aspect they are directly responsible for. Some work as food attendants some more closely with the flight staff and pilots.
Cabin crew are required to inform and lead evacuation procedures, serve food and drinks, provide all possible comfort measures to passengers, cater for unusual or specific needs, inform about destination or other flight changes and provide first aid.
Flight attendants need to enjoy flying, travelling and working closely with people. They need to be able to live out a suitcase for, potentially, long periods of time, work very well with other people, well groomed, satisfy height requirements, work under pressure and have good health and fitness.
It can be a very competitive industry, with many complaints in the past decade over discrimination and unfair dismissal. Most applicants have no prior education except for completion of VCE or equivalent. There are TAFE programs available to help enter the industry including Aviation Flight Operations and Aviation Management however most Flight Providers offer their own training courses to ensure staff continuity.
Entrants into this industry are also required to hold or gain a qualification in First Aid, Responsible service of Alcohol and pass a security check in order to begin Cabin Crew Training. The salary of a flight attendant depends on the hours worked and the destinations travelled to, however the industry average is approximately $56K. Most Flight providers pay for accommodation and out-of-pocket expenses for overnight stays out of a crew member's home town.
