Becoming a Bar Man or Bar Attendant


A bar attendant is a popular position with young adults as is allows for them to be out in popular places meeting new people and generally listening to good music. Being a bar man is all about customer service, preparing, mixing, creating and serving drinks for customers. These drinks can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic in a range of outlets including bars, clubs, hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, cafes and private functions.

Bar attendants need to be friendly, have good communication skills, work well with others, have a good memory, able to work late night hours, qualified to serve alcohol and able to work under pressure and in busy conditions. Some bar staff may also be required to work in and be qualified to work in gaming areas, make and serve coffee, work with money and assist with inventory.

Bar attendants are required to obtain a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate and in some cases an individual gaming licence as well. For those also required to serve coffee, a coffee course may also need to have been attended. Workers in this industry need to be 18 years of age.

To become a bar man, no tertiary education is required, however there are a large range of TAFE courses available to further skills and assist with gaining a bar position. Bar staff often work while studying or while holding an additional job during day hours. The average pay of a full time Barman is $35K. Casual workers in this industry can be well paid if they work for a hospitality and event company.
